ASU and AAAS announced a new program today, claiming to take a fresh approach by having applied scientists focus on solving society’s problems. But isn’t that what applied science has always aimed to do? This time, they say, it will be “inclusive.” But wait—aren’t all state universities already required to be inclusive? Is ASU suggesting that some state universities violate state and federal laws by discriminating in their admissions policies? Neither the focus on applied science nor the commitment to inclusion is unique to ASU. What does stand out, however, is ASU’s decision to double down on its commitment to DEI philosophy by making identity politics the heart of its STEMM+ programs.
