This is certainly my experience. I am the only non-Democrat in my entire department. There are only 2 non-democrats in the entire language and literature department. We live in a county in Florida(mostly Red) that is about 50-50 in the political divide. This make up of faculty is certainly not representative of our community.
That said, I do think there is one other possibility not mentioned, that is there are fewer non-Democrat (conservative) applicants. You cannot selectively hire someone while considering their political views, as this is illegal, and academia has been against conservatives for some time. I think there are fewer and fewer conservatives to pick from, especially in the humanities. I genuinely believe there are positions at my college that don’t get any conservative applicants.
You mention hypocrisy as one of the reasons. The Left’s hypocrisy knows no bounds to the point that a new definition is needed. Best explanation I have heard came from Tucker Carlson; he said that it is not hypocrisy but “hierarchy.” The Left is openly telling you that there are two systems….of justice, of importance, of status, etc.
This, too, is essentially what I say about my own city and state: “There are only a few possible explanations for why this is happening. First, they are completely incompetent. Ironically, this is the most charitable interpretation—it gives them the benefit of the doubt. They genuinely intend to be inclusive and to represent their community, but they are simply incapable of doing so.”
