Trump is back! If you heard his speech today, you know that on day one, he took action to end the racism embedded in our universities. No more DEI initiatives—instead, we’re returning to a color-blind meritocracy. How fitting that this announcement came on MLK Day, accompanied by a powerful prayer from Pastor Lorenzo Sewell. We’re shifting the focus back to character and moving away from the racism of the left.
What happens now for the American universities? For example, ASU still requires its "Inclusive Communities" employee training, which includes a DEI(B) module, as a lesson. It tells people that the United States always was (and is) a white supremicist nation. Additionally, all 180,000 undergraduates must take a sustainability course, such as its "Seeds of Sustainability" course, which also features a DEI module. One lesson even instructs students to shop only at fair trade coffee shops and concludes with, "Here's a message from Starbucks." 🤨
These practices already violate Arizona state law, and now they are also at odds with federal law. What accountability measures will universities like ASU face to align with these legal changes? How can abuses and violations be reported and corrected? I have some ideas.
Just this weekend, I received an email from an ASU colleague attempting to sharply restrict my Constitutional freedoms. This colleague CC'd several high-ranking ASU officials, including a Vice President/Dean, a Vice Provost, and a School Director. In the email, the faculty member attempted to dictate where I can and cannot walk on ASU’s campus, what I can and cannot speak about publicly, and—believe it or not—even what I am allowed to think about. To top it off, I was also instructed on where I am and am not allowed to look.
ASU emails (with very few exceptions) are public domain. Here is what ASU says about it:
This means anyone can request ASU emails through a Freedom of Information Act inquiry. I’d be curious to see if any other conservative Christian faculty at ASU has ever been subjected to such abuse—being told what they can and cannot speak about, publish, where they can walk, where they can look, and even what they can think.
What I do on my Substack and other platforms is focus on ideas and arguments. I won’t give up my freedom to do so, and I’ll defend it at every level. However, some professors have resorted to creating brand-new anonymous Substack accounts to launch personal attacks against me. I’m still waiting for an actual philosophical argument. And waiting. 🥱
I know what you’re thinking: “surely the Dean, Provost, and Director stepped in to reprimand this person for such a blatant attempt to violate your freedom of speech, thought, motion, and looking.” You’d expect them to say something like, “Your email crosses the line, and ASU emails should not be used for this purpose. You are blocked from using ASU email until you complete a training class on respecting diversity.”
And then they’d step up to defend you, saying, “Professor Anderson, we deeply appreciate your unwavering commitment to academic freedom at ASU. In recognition of your contributions, we are thrilled to announce an award ceremony where you will receive ASU’s highest honor: the Sparky Medallion of Socratic Investigation into Who is Wise and Who is Not Wise.”
But no—there wasn’t a single word of correction.
“But Anderson,” you might ask, “what if those same severe abuses had been aimed at a radical liberal faculty member?” Well, you tell me. These administrators at ASU did not correct my colleague or move to project my freedoms. Why not?
I’ll be helping people report such violations by state universities to the Trump White House. If you have something you’d like to report, feel free to share it with me, or I’ll provide a link you can use to submit it directly.
Let’s dream again—free at last!
Yes sir. MLK all the way. I think this is something we all can get behind. Too bad all my friends were at the MLK march instead of watching the inauguration. Formerly the “Not my president” and “resist” women’s march in 2016.
I absolutely LOVED his prayer!! I was on my feet by the end! 🙏💜
