As you remember, the ASU Religious Studies Department objected to my REL 270 Introduction to Christianity syllabus. Their objections were: 1) I use the term “Biblical Worldview,” 2) I cover the Old Testament without looking at how it is understood by Judaism, 3) I talk about Western Civilization, 4) I teach the course from a Christian perspective, 5) I don’t mention slavery and colonialism.
A new development: Today, I received the syllabus that the Religious Studies Department proposes we use. Imagine my shock when I saw that this syllabus wouldn’t even pass their own standards. It solves the OT/Judaism problem by . . . ignoring the OT! It doesn’t mention slavery or colonialism either! It requires the students, in one assignment, to interview a Christian . . . in order to get a Christian perspective about studying Christianity.
If they continue to press this issue with their syllabus, I will post both theirs and my syllabus so that you can see what I am talking about. It confirms what I have wondered: I am dealing with hypocrites. These are persons who are comfortable contradicting themselves. Why? Who will stop them? They answer to no one. Or at least, that is what they think. Let’s see if it is true.
Yes, I’d be very interested to know if they face any consequences…they should be fired!
Shows just how much the colleges in America have changed over the years. College used to be a place where a plethora of topics could be taught and discussed. Now they are mind control centers.
