This is one of my favorite examples of the kinds of materials we are presented in faculty meetings. The idea here is that heterosexuals are afraid they will become homosexuals if they are around homosexuals. According to this view, they then use this fear to control sexual minorities.
This is perfectly consistent with Freudian psychology. But the question is: why on earth would anyone adopt Freudian psychology? Freud analyzes the mind in terms of phobias and neuroses. In his view, a healthy mind can express its desires without fear of inhibition.
What Freud does not have is the category of morality. For him, morality is merely a social control mechanism. It is arbitrary. It is a social construct. There is no reason why we must live by moral norms except that we don’t want the disapprobation of our peers.
But what if there is a moral law structured into the nature of things? What if our main fear should not be alienation from our peers but alienation from God due to violating his commands? This category is not considered by those adopting the Fruedian view and making us sit through lectures about homophobia. They simply do not have the category of “moral law.” And therefore, they must analyze everything in terms of phobia.
It is time to reject the Freudian view. Parents and students should expect open debate about the truth of the moral law.
All the while seeking to enforce Freudian morality.
