You might remember that my school at ASU asked us to “decolonize” our curriculum. On the face of it, this can sound like being more multicultural. Add in more books and thinkers from around the world. But “decolonizing” is a specific philosophy that goes beyond the multicultural movement. It has especially shown its true beliefs after Oct 7th by speaking against Israel and interpreting the atrocities of that day as a legitimate resistance to “colonizers” and “settlers.”
A recent article on Fox News quotes a University of Minnosota professor, Melanie Yazzie, at an event earlier this month. There, she said that “it's our responsibility as people who are within the United States to go as hard as possible to decolonize this place, because that will reverberate all across the world.” People need a narrative where there is a hero and a villain. In her worldview, the villain is the United States which represents all the colonizers and settlers from the last 500 years. Whatever it does is bad, whatever someone does to attack it or one of its sponsored states is good.
What is the goal of decolonizing? She says, “the goal is to dismantle the settlers project that is the United States for the freedom and the future of all life on this planet.” What group does she look to for inspiration in this plan? She tells us, “Palestine is the alternative path for native nations.” What they did on Oct 7th is, she says, part of a “righteous struggle.”
The secular university has relied on classical liberalism, which says that all perspectives should be studied and debated. However, the decolonizing left is open about their criticism of classical liberalism. Following Herbert Marcuse, they speak of “repressive tolerance” and the need to end freedom of speech for some views because those views are evil. Which are those views? Colonizers and settlers. As we saw last spring at ASU, it is Jewish and Christian beliefs about God and marriage that are censored. Prof. Yazzie calls liberalism “trash that was founded upon imperialism and colonialism.”
What plan does she propose? Resistance. “Resistance is the only thing . . . the only kind of death blows to colonialism, imperialism that have happened historically.” This sounds like what I hear from some professors at ASU as well. This is what is being taught at the American universities.
Parents, students, pastors, legislators, donors, is this the kind of teaching you want to sit under and learn from? Professors insist they are in control of their own class content. But no one has to take classes where these beliefs are taught. You need to know what professors believe and teach as you consider where to send your children, or where to study, or what universities to support.
