Az House of Representatives opens an investigation into ASU about
Arizona Representative Austin Smith wrote to the Arizona Board of Regents. He is requesting an investigation into ASU’s conduct. The Regents are supposed to be the watchdog of the public universities in Arizona. The Regents hold a Regents Cup which is to support free speech on campus. But Rep. Smith notes that ASU appears to have violated free speech in handling the Dennis Prager event, driving away donors from the Lewis Center, and in the loss of Ms. Atkinson’s job and firing of Lin Blake.
This letter reminded me of how the Arizona Constitution protects free speech. Here is what Article 2, Section 6 says: “Section 6. Every person may freely speak, write, and publish on all subjects, being responsible for the abuse of that right.” As you know, the majority of the faculty of ASU’s honors college object to conservatives like Dennis Prager being able to speak on campus. They do not want ASU to allow representation from conservative positions with which they disagree. This is in violation of the Arizona Constitution.
Donors, how does this affect your willingness to invest in ASU? Parents of potential students, do you want your child sent to a university with these difficulties over one conservative event (while dozens of radical leftist events are held without controversy)? Students, does this make you rethink ASU as a choice of a university if you are conservative?
