I received this interesting email today. ASU now covers gender reassignment that is considered “medically necessary.” That means taxpayers are now funding these “medically necessary” procedures. This is not unique to ASU. It is due to an executive order from our Democrat Governor. The debate is whether such “reassignments” are elective or necessary. I would like to see public debate about this. On what basis is this procedure “necessary” and others considered “elective” not necessary? Why not consider all previously categorized “elective” procedures as necessary?
That is the first place to start. Define “medically necessary” for us. Parents, students, and legislators, this is an important question as you consider what it means for a secular university to be neutral.
Apt point! Yet, I fear with the current ruling orthodoxy coupled with the prospect of a woke backlash, few doctors or therapists would have the courage to argue that such procedures are elective.
